I am back writing on my blog again after some time away from it. A lot has happened since my last entry and it is even a new year now.
Yesterday my office chair finally broke completely, it’s been slowly failing for the past few months. I’ve had that chair for more than 15 years so I can’t say it didn’t last a good long time. Still, last night when I hauled it to the trash dumpster I felt a bit of nostalgic loss…
I find myself back in the position of having to look for a new job and while things are a little better than last time, it is still a painful process. In order to find a job nowadays you have to have a thick skin. Most of what is called “help” that people offer is in reality a masked power trip.
Here I am back to write a little something more in this blog. I spent a little time working on the site, adding a little content and also some on the Amazon ads. The whole thing is still a work on progress as I think about what would be cool things to add to the site. Your suggestions on this are welcome.
I selected Amazon for my first foray into advertising on my site because of the existing relationship that I have with them. Amazon is where I have been selling e-books for several years and it is also by far the one with the best sales. There is a little bit of discomfort in this disparity in sales because I am learning the hard way that it is not good to be dependent upon just one company for income. But it doesn’t seem like there is anything that I can do about it by myself so I just live with it.
I’ve added a comment page to the WordPress part of the site and you can feel free to try that out if you like. It’s more sophisticated than the one on the regular part of the site, we’ll see how this one works out.
It has been a few days since I last wrote something here so I guess it is time to put something here again. Been out doing some job interviews and just getting out of the house for some exercise, which seems to be important at my age.
I also created a new web site at richardbuttars.org to add to my web site collection. The main difference between that site and others that I have is that one is hosted using a Windows server instead of Linux. I’m developing that one as an ASP.NET site using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008. If you haven’t already why don’t you pop over there and check it out.
I would like to ask everyone reading this to help me if they can. First of all, if you know anyone hiring software engineers (or if you need to hire one yourself), then please let me know. But even if you don’t have that you can still help me. One way is if you purchase one or more of my books that I have written. And if you are thinging of buying anything from Amazon please use this link to get there.
I have my site back up after an outage of nearly 24 hours. Somehow my ISP changed or let get changed all the permissions on the files on this site, hiding everything. After a half hour on the phone to my hosting provider I have it all back. For me the lesson from this is not to have a single point of failure so I am setting more sites to releive this one. The first is richardbuttars.info and I will be adding more as time goes on.
I’ve also finally figured out how to use the Facebook “Like” button generator thingy so I will be adding that to most of my pages sooner or later. LinkedIn also has the same thing though I will probably use that one a little more judiciously considering that site’s different slant. I never really had much interest in driving a lot of traffic to my site before now but that is changes. Now, the more visitors I get, the better.
I have also created my first Amazon store and I am still learning about doing that sort of thing. But I already know that this first one will only be the first one of many that I will be creating as time goes on. There is some learning associated with it but mostly it is a tedium of deciding on what products to add to the store pages and then actually adding them.
More next time…
Hi everyone! I am continuing work on the main part of the web site and adding content that both shows my interest and maybe makes it interesting for people to visit. It’s also my forum for practicing and testing new (to me anyway) web techniques.
Since my main contract ended last month I am looking for new work, either contract or better yet as an employee. If you know of someone who needs a good software developer please steer them in my direction. Just thought I would throw that out there.
One of the big challenges in creating a web site is thinking up the different things to write and put into it. The hosting plan I have is for unlimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth so that throws the onus onto me to think of what to write and put in there. My goal is not to just have toys on here but rather something that actually has a useful purpose for the site and at the same time reflects my level of knowledge and skill.
I’ve had WordPress on this site for a long time but it is only recently that I have started doing anything with it. It’s a popular engine for hosting blogs and other content so I need to start using it and learning what it can do. Eventually I hope to get to the point where I can modify the WordPress code to do new things but I am not there yet.
I spent most of the day today on job interviews or driving to and from job interviews. I’m pretty glad that I am getting interviews but at the same time they are a bit grueling, as much for the tension you’re under as anything else. Even though I still have enough money to pay my expenses I want to go back to work as soon as I can.
I am still learning about WordPress and what it can do for me. The most obvious use is for a blogging engine that I completely control (including what advertisements are placed on it). But it seems like there are other things that it can do for me and I am looking into learning about those as well. I always like to experiment and learn everything that I can so this is another opportunity for me to do that.
In a lot of ways my web presence is similar to the computers that I have at home in that I only use a small part of what I have available. I’ve been working on filling up some of the available space but I have a lot left to do on it. But thinking of interesting things to write on this site can be more challenging that it might seem but I will give it my best shot.
More next time.
I am finally getting started with this side of my site and I hope that I will be using it a lot more in the future. Even though I’ve had WordPress on my site for years I haven’t done much with it until now. I hope to change that now, though.
Just a short little note, more later.
Hello everyone! Even though I’ve had WordPress installed on this site for a long time this is the first time that I have had the chance to use it. In terms 0f WordPress I’m still learning how it all works and what I can do with it so you will see things evolve over time.
This is one of several blogging engines that I have available for my use but for the others the programming part of it is provided and controlled by someone else. But here I can do what I want and experiment as I please. I am also curious to see how the performance of this compares to my static site.
